I have an older Dell, probably 4 to 5 years old, but still use it alot to get on the web. I have found lately though that I can not even download anything from the web, I can save pictures and look at things, but if I want to download an update for my antivirus, it will go thru the work of downloading, but when done, it doesn't leave an icon, or info that I have done anything. I am pretty sure that I have a few viruses running, If I buy a new anti virus and download from a disk on my computer will it take care of the viruses running that are stopping me from using the computer to its fullest?
And do you recommend a good anti virus to buy?
Thanks for the help if any

Try disabling your AV and run and online scan. Also try Malwarebytes if you're able to d/l it. You could try booting into safemode with networking and install from a USB stick.

I'm assuming you're running XP. You could also try Combofix. It's a very powerful tool. I'd use it as a last resort. It's been known to totally crash a computer, but it's worked flawlessly for me many times. Be sure to follow all the instructions. As a last resort, why not just reformat?
