An ambulance service discovered the troubled performer, 27, unconscious at her home at 3:54 local time, but was unable to revive her, according to London police.

The cause of death for Winehouse, known for a defiant anthem about her unwillingness to seek drug treatment, "Rehab," was listed as "unexplained" by authorities.

The singer, also known for powerful vocals and her ability to perform in a range of music genres that included everything from R&B to soul to jazz, had a long history with substance abuse.

In fact, Winehouse's Wikipedia page has already been updated to say she died of a drug overdose -- although no one in official authority has publicly confirmed that.

According to the London Daily Mail, Winehouse had been seen with her goddaughter, Dionne Bromfield, earlier this week as the teenager performed at the iTunes Festival.

Quoting an unnamed source, the paper said Winehouse "staggered onstage" at one point and "grabbed the mic to beg the crowd to buy her protege's new album."

Winehouse had earlier cancelled a European tour following a disastrous performance in June, when she stumbled all over a stage in Belgrade -- a concert so bad, it triggered a viral-video outpouring.

Her spokesman released a statement shortly afterward, saying the singer would be sidelined until she recovered.

"Everyone involved wishes to do everything they can to help her return to her best, and she will be given as long as it takes to make this happen," the statement read.

Winehouse had been working on a long-awaited follow-up to her multi-million-selling breakout album, 2006's "Back to Black," which won five Grammys.

Was not surprised when I saw the news on IMDB. She lived fast and partied hard, was bound to happen sooner or later with her type of lifestyle.

27 is too young to depart this earth. You will be missed

Very sad, if not unexpected.

So talented, so beautiful (at least she was)
Truly a waste.

I recall seeing something about her recently where she couldn't even stand up at one of her concerts. Very sad, indeed.

The father of British singer Amy Winehouse said he believed his daughter died of a seizure brought on by ending years of binge drinking.

In his first major TV interview since the death of Winehouse, Mitch Winehouse told U.S. journalist Anderson Cooper that illicit drugs had nothing to do with her sudden passing at her London home in July.

Mitch Winehouse said the only drug in her system was the prescription medication Librium, which is used to help people with the symptoms of alcohol detoxification.

"She'd been clean (of drugs) for around about three years....Her problem was alcohol, the last few years of her life...She was prescribed Librium, which is a normal drug, which is given to people who are detoxing and it kind of decreases the chances of having seizures. She was continuing to take one of those pills everyday.

"She had a series of seizures brought on by this binge drinking and then stopping to drink....I think it's what the doctor said, I think she had a seizure and this was the time when there was no one there to rescue her," Winehouse told Cooper in an interview broadcast on Monday.

I was shocked when she passed and saddened that everyone assumed it was as a direct result of drugs (though there is no doubt that it was def. an indirect result in many ways of her hard partying lifestyle like miss silver said). I was so upset more because she though a wonderful, refreshing talent, became what many predicted. I'd rather have seen her get her life together and beat the public's predictions so that we could all see her continue to blossom and grow musically and personally. She was beautiful physically and artistically. IMHO her voice was just fascinating when she sang jazz standards and I loved her album |Frank| the most though i listen to her |Back to Black| album a lot as well. She is so missed... it's touching to hear that ppl thanked her Mom for having her and how much that simple gesture touched her mom's heart. If i could i'd thank Janis Winehouse too. Despite the bad press she got on her personal life, I still loved Amy. I was really routing for her continued musical success and her rebound from the addictive lifestyle in which she seemed to be caught.
