The service price for this no-commitment, unlimited, portable hot spot is — are you sitting down? — $40 a month.
That’s no typo. It’s $40 a month.

combined with the new itouch running 3 dollar skype call out you have an unlimited calling/data plan (including video conf) for 43 dollars/mo. there's nothing out that even begins to compare.
it's about what many subscribers pay for dsl or less, and almost as fast, and this can replace it for some of them, so no, i think it's amazingly cheap considering they can drive across the country with it, with anyone in the car accessing the net at broadband speeds.

I just updated my Droid today and they added an icon for 3g mobile hotspot. Of course it costs extra not sure how much. But I use an app (free or you can upgrade for a small fee to use https) to tether my phone to my netbook. I think if you're paying for the service you should be able to use it. I find browsing with my phone to be pretty useless.

i agree rasta. having a phone to browse on is better than nothing, but just barely. these portable hot spots give any area real wi-fi access and people really use them. i remember the first time i did. a friend activated his for me in a bar and all of a sudden laptops began appearing out of nowhere.

Now I see. I'm sorry to say this, but Europe is ahead of the US in this respect it seems. DSL/cable subscribers here get much higher and reliable speeds, but pay less (flat fee, always on). The mobile subscription is about 30 euros per month if I'm not mistaken.
I actually quit with being connected everywhere, as I couldn't get any rest any more
