i just updated my k-lite codec packs from 4x to 6.0.4 on all my boxes. i hadn't realized they had gotten so out of date.
i wasn't sure i could install the pack released at the beginning of this month over the old ones so i uninstalled them using add/remove, then installed the new ones cleanly.
immediately after launching, k-lite took me to a site saying there was a small upgrade file i could install over the new one for 6.0.7, the absolute latest version, plus it would upgrade my media classic player to "home cinema."
so i did.
it was worth it. the new mpc-hc plays mkvs perfectly while the old one stuttered so much it was basically unwatchable, and when used for streaming music files is much improved too.

hehe jack thats funny,
I had to update my codecs to get my soundcard to output AC3 audio over spdif into my receiver. now FFDSHOW passes through Dolby and DTS audio directly to my TV and surround system! love the click noise my stereo makes when it see's a Dolby or DTS file being played

I uninstalled the K-lite codec pack quite some time ago.
I don't really have many playback issues anymore.
Maybe file formats are just becoming more standardized? Do you guys come across many files that need specific codecs these days?

after streaming a particular song or video that i decide i have to keep, i copy it from my temporary browser cache and paste it into a permanent folder. the thing is, the flv codec improves occasionally and eventually my media player can't decode the new ones, also, movie rippers seem to change codecs occasionally too so yeah, i do have to update to stay current, at least once in a while.
