The Avatar is just released and good to see James Cameron on the director's chair.I am wondering that his previous one was the monster Blockbuster with highest grossing in history. What you think will avatar break this record?

Yeah it will. Simply because it appeals to larger audience. ALL movie goers will enjoy it. I didn't see too many kids at Titanic. I saw the regular version (non3D) tonight and it was good. I got to say the music wasn't as good as Titanic. I think Horner did put together as much unique stuff but it a weird collection of Lion King meets Titanic if that makes any sense to you. The SE was great though. It will really change the playing field for talented actors. It's kind of mean to say but it gives a good avenue to talent that may not have the "Box Office" good looks but has great screen presence and ability. This first came to mind when Andy Sirkis played Golum in LOTR. Same deal but the characters are so polished. Very touching when the two romantic leads meet human to NA'VI. Good stuff.

Avatar cost more to make than Titanic did so it follows that it will make more money too, but $1.8 billion is an extremely high water mark. It's got a number of things going for it. For one, inflation has driven up the price of movie tickets in the 12 years since Titanic. For another, 3D movie tickets tend to cost about a dollar more than 2D movies, and Avatar premiered on over 3,000 3D screens. Finally, while it is about two and a half hours long, its running time is still shorter than Titanic's which means theaters can fit more showings into a normal business day.

I saw it twice over the weekend (my brother works at the theater and gets me in for free sometimes), both times in 3D, and I thought it was excellent. The plot is nothing new but the setting is very original, giving new life to a story we've all seen before. I haven't seen a James Cameron movie that I haven't loved and Avatar was no disappointment.

I saw it over the weekend in Dolby3D. Should have went to see it in a RealD theater, glasses are way more comfortable. Great movie though, good enough that I may go see it again.

I haven't been to a theater to see a movie in ages, think it was MIB I.

This could be worth it in 3D.

I've seen seven 3D movies (and a couple dozen movie trailers in 3D) and this one had the most natural, least distracting effect of them all. Most directors constantly try to remind you that you're watching a 3D movie to justify the cost of production, sort of the way The Wizard of Oz had ridiculously bright colors to justify the cost of Technicolor. Hopefully more 3D movies directors will take their cues from Avatar 'cause it's real easy on the eyes.

I read that the 3D isn't that big of a deal...that after the intro you really don't notice it...I also heard that the subtitles are a bitch to read.

If the 3D made the subtitles hard to read wouldn't that force you to notice it? I didn't have trouble reading the subtitles, they floated in the same plane as the movie screen and only appeared in scenes where nothing protruded in front of them.

There are scenes where you don't notice any 3D because you're looking at large landscapes where there would be little noticeable depth to begin with. The rest of the time you don't notice it because it isn't calling attention to itself, which I don't think it should do anyway.

You mostly only notice it in extreme closeup, live action shots with a narrow depth-of-field: you try to focus your eyes on objects that still appear blurry because the photographer didn't focus the camera on them. That's a problem with every live action 3D movie. It's much less noticeable in Avatar because over 70% of the movie is CG; the CG scenes are rendered with an infinite depth-of-field so you can focus your eyes on every object in the scene.

I used to like doing those MagicEye pictures a lot. When I was getting evaluated for my cataract lens replacement, they gave me a test to see which eye was dominant. It was a closeup chart or something and I couldn't focus on it without going cross eyed.

Close one, though. It could stay in the top three for weeks to come.

In related news, on Thursday the movie industry posted $10 billion in year-to-date ticket sales for the first time ever.

I saw it last night. Two thumbs up for me. I liked this movie a lot. I would even consider seeing it a second time.

<sarcasm>Yeah, but imagine how much more they would have made if not for piracy!?!!?! They probably had to cut back from 12 cars to 11, bless their hearts. :hyper: </sarcasm>

I recommend seeing it rastaX. I saw it at a RealD theater and it was great. Well worth the $3 extra for the 3D glasses

I also recommend it in 3D. I seen it on wednesday night. Its pretty long, but a good show all the same. The 3D was worth it!

Thinking I'll see Sherlock Holmes this weekend...

I've been watching its ticket sales on www.the-numbers.com and now that it's been out for four weekends I'm gonna go out on a limb here and make a prediction: Avatar will be the first movie to make $2 billion in worldwide ticket sales.
