alt.binaries.paxer is nice

quickpar is actually pretty easy to use, and once i check the files i usually delete the PAR files!
rastaX
It is fairly involved to explain the whole process, but anyone who has used WinRAR can easily use QuickPAR. It is almost magical the way it restores corrupt files.

The only problem I have run into is that I can download so much, so quickly, it can take a bit of time to verify and unRAR all the files. But there are much worse problems to have........ hehe.gif

You can set QuickPar to do that for you. The only time it does though, if file/s need repairing. Otherwise, you still have to delete them manually. Of course, once your file is opened and rebuilt, you don't need anything in the folder anyway (unless you need the subs), so you can just delete the whole thing. ;).gif

yeah i have found that checking and unraring the files can take awhile but oh well!

Be happy to, buddy..........

man it's awesome it's like everything is so much clearer!

Thanks guys!
.FD.
Get RarSlave, it will check through the entire lot of rars in your download directory, repair them if needed and then extract them to the final file. Once it's done that it can auto delete both the rars and the pars. Guide here:

http://my.opera.com/DolfhinDC/blog/show.dml/21585

No time wasted manually doing it smile.gif.

That just about takes all the work out of Newsgroups.

Thanks, .FD.!

Newzgroups are waaay too hard to use and very very unuser friendly. On top of that they are very very slow. You can get cancer from newzgroups too.

Everyone should stay away from them. Nothing to see here, move along.
In fact the only thing in newzgroups are white papers on alternative uses for belly lint and earwax.
Did I say they are evil? Most likely created by Satan to lure newbs into the pits of hell. You really really don't want to mess with newzgroups.
Try Limewire. Really.

Well not exactly. Some of us are still to cheap to pay for access to a news server.

Oh well I still find what I want, just a little slower.
Cassavus
always wanted to get into the newsgroup scene. any suggestions as to where i should look into signing up?
rastaX
First, check with your ISP. Most provide some kind of NewsServer, but most are really crappy. However RB has a great NewsServer included free with his ISP package. Go to your ISPs site and do a search for NewsGroups or NewsServer. You are looking to see how much bandwidth they provide, (how much do you want to download) speed, (berks provider actually throttled their NewsGroup speed to discourage file downloads) retention, (how long they hold the content before deleting it, this is important, lookfor at least 30 days retention) and any other restrictions they may or may not place upon a NewsServer account. If they provide you with Unlimited bandwidth, no speed restrictions and good retention, look no further. You are golden.

However, if they don't meet the criteria above, you will need to look into purchasing a commercial NewsServer account. This actually may be the best way to go since most providers guarantee a certain amount of anonymity. In any event we have 2 very good providers as advertisers and in the name of full disclosure we will get a small commision if you subscribe to them via our link. ;).gif I can tell you I have used them both and they are both excellent Servers and as cheap as they come. Usenet-Access is $6mo. for 2 gigs a day and NewsHosting is $14.95 mo. for unlimited. Unlimited is great, since speed is so good, you can really download a lot of files.........

If you decide you want to go through with using NewsGroups, I have written a basic tutorial you can read and if you have any questions we will all be very happy to help you get started.

Hope this helps, it is really a great way to download, as long as you can hook up with a good NewsServer..........

For instance if your ISP were EarthLink. This is what they offer for Newsgroup Servers.

Is there a download quota limit?
Yes. In order to make our News service fair to all users, EarthLink does enforce download limits on its Usenet service. The limit is 5GB during the last 30 days. Please note that "Headers" and articles count towards the limit.

Unlike other services, we do not set limits based on calendar months. If you were to download 5GB on January 29th, you would be considered over quota until 30 days from then, or February 28th. Users that have not downloaded 5GB are able to interact with the server without any limits, while users that exceed the 5GB quota in their last 30 days of usage are rate-limited, or throttled, to 64 kilobits per second.

Note: This does not affect dialup users.

How do I check my quota history?
Simply visit https://www.news.earthlink.net/ and login on the left hand side. You will need your email address and password. Remember, your email address and password are case sensitive. (Make sure your CAPS LOCK button is off!)

What server name should I use?
Two servers are available for Newsgroups usage: news.west.earthlink.net and news.east.earthlink.net. For best performance, if you live west of the Mississippi River, you should use news.west.earthlink.net. If you live east of the Mississippi River, you should use news.east.earthlink.net. If you are unsure, you should use news.east.earthlink.net. Both servers will have the same functionality, capability, list of newsgroups, and articles.

All EarthLink members have access to both servers. We encourage you to select whichever server provides the best experience for you.

Do I need to log in to the news server?
Yes. All connections to the news servers require authentication. You must log in with your entire email address (e.g. johndoe@earthlink.net). Remember, your email address and password are case sensitive. (Make sure your CAPS LOCK button is off!)

How many connections may I open to the news server?
EarthLink news servers only allow four simultaneous logins from one connection. This means that you can have up to four programs accessing the news server at any given time.

How can I request that newsgroups be added?
You can post a message to earthlink.support.usenet, or send an email to newssupport@earthlink.net. However, at this time new newsgroups are not being added to the server.

How long does EarthLink keep articles on the news servers?
The retention goal for binary articles is seven (7) days. The retention goal for text articles is thirty (30) days. Please note that this is only a general guideline, and actual retention may vary.

Are there any posting limits?
If you are experiencing slow uploads and/or timeouts when trying to post messages to a newsgroup, it is likely that you have exceeded the daily limit on message uploads.

What is the maximum size of a post we accept?
One megabyte. This is generally considered the standard for most Usenet servers.

*Note* As far as dealing with Newsgroup Servers EarthLink sucks.

Newshosting is great. Cheap, reliable and if you click our link, we get a commission............. ;).gif
Wobbel
Newshosting here as well, unlimited, >40 days retention, 99% complete, 8 connections allowed, $14.95/month.
And as fast as your isp allows you.... >Click to view attachment

With that USENET-ACCESS 2 gigs per day does that roll over if you don't use it ?

Day 1 download 1 gig
Day 2 download 1 gig

Can I download 4 gigs on day 3 ?
rastaX
Nope. Lemme tell you, I ate that limit up in a couple of hours, LOL. I have used both those plans, I started with the Usenet Access, it is a good server, reliable, etc. But that amount goes fast. They also have an unlimited plan for $14.95, they didn't tell me until I quit. I haven't seen it advertised on their site. It is a good plan if you want to try out usenet, but I outgrew it quick. If you can swing it go with NewsHosting, it is the best. ;).gif
Lastat
you really need unlimited NitnayLion. 1 dvd download is around 5GB alone.
Roadblock
It might depend on your ISP speed. If it is slow, say 768 download, then it might work out for you. But, if you have at least 1.5 Mb, then you'll use 2GB up pretty fast. ;).gif

There's a really cheap service for ppl who are cheap or who have slow connections or who aren't in a hurry.

Speed/Conn Connections Combined Speed Monthly
128Kbps 3 384Kbps/48KBps US $4.95

That's Octanews and works out to about 125GB/month if you go 24/7. If you pay for 6 months in advance they'll probably give you another 10% off. I've heard it's pretty complete and reliable but with low retention. It seems a little slow to me where DVD's are concerned, but it's damn cheap and gives you access to a wide variety of things. Like this ;).gif
