There was a time when WinMX was the king of file-sharing. For a brief time, it was arguably larger than FastTrack (Kazaa, Grokster), eDonkey2000, and Gnutella. But that was a long time ago, when the P2P community actually meant something. When FrontCode Technologies, the company behind WinMX, received a “cease and desist” letter from the music industry in 2005, the entire project was abandoned.

The WinMX decentralized network, as it turned out, wasn’t so decentralized. The WinMX client depended on active IP addresses to connect to the network, which were stored on cache servers maintained by FrontCode Technologies. Once these servers went offline, it was impossible to connect, trade, or share files. Although WinMX had been in a slow state of decline for about a year, thanks to the unfulfilled promises of WinMX 4.0 and the arrival of BitTorrent, it remained an excellent resource for MP3s.

i loved winmx and anything that gets it going again is welcome but i stopped using it long before the court ordered it closed. the insane queues and a lack of development killed it for me. frontcode was releasing betas fast and furious - sometimes five in a week - but all were superficial changes. the long promised queue-free 3.0 never arrived. they get that worked out and it could be be a very popular app once more.

WinMX was awesome. I used it right up to Front Code closing the project. I tried one of the patches, I think there were 2 main ones, but it just wasn't the same so I moved on. It is good to hear that the community is building again. Just wish Front Code had released the source code so development could continue on the actual app.

I believe it was version 4.0 that never came out..
They were grat for finding Videos & Albumwraps (MP3s)

I installed 3.53 this morning..no problems at..connected just as fast as it ever did....
I found my 1st search had 1 user...about 1/2 hour later 2 more jumped in & I got my full CD in about 10 min..
I've been hit about a dozen times now.
I made a few more random searches..and shit is coming up...so I'll use it from time to time.
I got what I wanted so I ain't complaining.
Good thing I kept a copy of AlbumWrap Extractor...nothing like seeing all those old CDs in ALBW format. ;)
