Firefox 2.0 has officially been released for download by Mozilla. Despite great fanfare, new features, and a growing user base, many problems are already surfacing with the new release of the Firefox browser. While some were already underwhelmed with the now-released product, and disputed the 2.0 badge, it seemed that the development was following the Mozilla Roadmap quite closely.

However, in the few days since the release, the lack of polished improvements combined with a high level of user satisfaction with the older version of the browser have given rise to a growing sense that upgrading to 2.0 might not be a good idea.

Here's Why:
  • The new theme is too bulky, inconsistent on different platforms, and inferior to the highly refined and very user friendly theme of 1.5 (this is despite late efforts by Mozilla to spruce up the icon set and improve consistency)

  • Antiphishing technology is both weak (blacklist based) and a potential privacy problem. The privacy issues are raised because Firefox 2.0 Antiphishing Features employ an engine previously released by Google, which has been shown to potentially cause privacy risks.

  • The new Options dialog box is confusing, poorly designed, and illogically hides important features

  • There are many reported compatibility issues with the large existing libraries of extensions, themes, and plugins currently avaialble for earlier versions of Firefox. While this can, to some degree, be expected, the loss of this huge user contributed extension base is a non-trivial problem with Firefox 2.0, and could be a deal breaker for some people all by itself

  • The well known memory leak issue, which causes the Firefox browser to consume ever increasing amounts of RAM, eventually leading to sluggish performance and crashes, has been carried over into yet another generation. This is despite an enormous amount of public commentary and user requests for resolution prior to release of a new version of Firefox

  • There are reported problems with the CSS engine in Firefox 2.0, affecting various websites, and making certain features unavailable to surfers. Notable among these is a continued problem with certain aspects of Yahoo! mail

  • Reports indicate that episodes of random freezing during use are worse with the 2.0 version, though a cause has not yet been isolated.

  • Numerous users have reported that the History bar is buggy, and that in some instances - for unknown reasons - will not display recent items when the history menu is opened as a side panel

  • RSS feed handling has taken a step backwards, and is inferior to that of IE7.
Not all of these issues have been reported by all users, and several are matters of personal preference. If you are happy with the Firefox 1.5 experience, and depend on several extensions, themes, or plugins for day to day use, the the problems reported with Firefox 2.0 may indicate that waiting to upgrade is a good course of action.

Intersting. I am happy with my Opera browser. However, I was going to try it out, but I think I'll wait until a few of these issues are solved.

Thanks for the heads up.

Same here Rack, Opera is my browser of choice, but I also like FF. Sounds like they jumped the gun a bit on this release. Hopefully, they will get it all sorted out. :)

Probably trying to keep up with the release of IE7; of course, I run the 1.5 of FF. Never tried Opera.. might need to give that a shot. Don't think I've ever heard anyone displeased with it.

i still use Mozilla 1.0.2 and Phoenix 0.3 (pre-firefox) less features = less vulnerabilities.
i only use firefox for pandora.com because i can save the mp3's from the temp folder :)

I've already upgraded to 2.0 and haven't had a single problem with it. The few extensions (now called add-ons) I use have already been updated. Even among the people who are having trouble with the upgrade, I doubt any of them have more than one or two of the nine problems listed above. People with different browsing habits will have different experiences using the new browser, and in the time to come I expect that these problems will prove to be few and far in between. They'll be fixed with a quickness as well.

I installed 2.0 version. System (Internet) on startup slowed right down. Also unable to run Mozilla Thunderbird when using Mozilla 2.0 version.

Earlier able to run BitTorrent at same time on earlier version of Mozilla Firefox 1.5. Sometimes the glossy look just isnt worth the hassle

Works fine for me on Linux. I kinda like the new theme, actually. On Linux no single theme aligns with the OS, so that's not an issue/exception. I love that they finally put a close button on each tab. And... have you tried typing "2 + 2" in the google search bar? Gotta love it ;)
It was time for a new sig

I installed FF 2.0 on my wife's XP machine, and I am running Swiftfox 2.0 on Linux here. No problems to report. ;)

Works good for me. I haven't had any problems with it. I installed IE7 and i like it but it quits responding alot for some reason and I have to ctrl-alt-delete to close it. I've been giving FF a go, on and off for some time but I'm really liking how it works for me now.

I like the spellcheck in 2. Other than that though, there's nothing I'm anxious to rave about, other than I still prefer it to anything IE I've ever tried.

Funny thing is, Lion just told me how to remove IE7 yesterday. :P

I am setting up the new comp I just finished building and I actually bought a copy of XP MCE for it. First time I have ever used a real live legal copy of XP. I have another copy I bought, but have never used it. I must say, the pirate copies with all the updates and tweaks are a helluva lot easier to use. But, I digress. I updated, and updated, and updated. After over 80 updates I was done. But during this process, it loaded IE7. I saw it doing it, but I never really use it so I didn't care. Problem was, my version of Quickbooks (maybe all versions) wasn't compatible. So I had to uninstall IE7 and roll back to IE6. I had trouble, so I called Lion and he walked me through it.

Hehe, and here is the thread I needed, yesterday.......... Oh well, better late than never, and Lion got me set up. :P

I have been having issues with yahoo mail in FF 2 for awhile now, been emailing back and forth with yahoo about the problem. They fix it then the problem comes back and FF crashes when i view mail with 2-3 tabs open, but when i have 1 tab open no problems. Other then that i like FF-2 alot.
